Licence numbers for non-government vehicles always start with the code of the hundred or borough (hundreds always have three letters, boroughs
one or two) where the
owner of the car is registered, followed by the tax sticker (see picture to the left) with the coat of arms of the shire, thereafter a code of two letters and up to 4 numbers. It is possible for any person at the registration of his/her new licence number to choose any currently available letter-number combination, at no extra cost.
